Automated Writing Evaluation with Corrective Feedback
Published in Proceedings of the 2026 International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Education, 2026
The use of technology in second language writing assessment has become ubiquitous. In particular, automated writing evaluation (AWE) and grammatical error correction (GEC) are popular tools for providing immediate, individualized feedback to learners. Traditionally, AWE (automated scoring) and GEC (automated correction) have been developed separately. In this paper, we present an integrated system that combines neural AWE and GEC to deliver both an objective essay score and corrective feedback to a learner in one go. The system allows learners to simulate an essay-writing test by submitting an essay and receiving an automated score along with suggested grammatical corrections. This integration is intended to bridge the gap between scoring and feedback, alleviating the burden on instructors by handling large volumes of essays more efficiently. A demonstration of the system is available at https://youtu.be/CoqmBqqcXio.
